Did you know that the favorite Filipino breakfast bread of choice, the pan de sal, which is Spanish for “salt bread,” was once also referred to as the “bread of the poor”?

According to food historians, the pan de sal, which originated in Spain, became an alternative to rice at the height of the Philippine revolution against Spanish rule.

Did you also know that another Filipino comfort food, the empanada, also has Spanish origins?

The name comes from the Spanish empanar, and translates as ‘breaded’, that is, wrapped or coated in bread
