Pizza, that glorious piece of heaven on earth. The nice thing about t is that pizza has a lot of variations suiting everyone’s wish – from those with lots of meat and all, to those with anchovies and, yes, even pineapple.

The first known pizza is believed to have taken its roots back to the ancient Middle East where the Babylonians, Israelites and Egyptians ate flat bread baked in mud ovens.

Over time, the Italians did their share where street vendors in Naples were selling flat breads with toppings ages ago. A story has been passed from generations over about Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visiting Naples in 1889 where baker Raffaele Esposito  was asked to make them a pizza. He topped the pizza with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil in has become known as the  Pizza Margherita today.

Italian immigrants brought pizza with them to Spain, France, England, and the United States and the rest is history.  (Photo courtesy of Valerio Capello )
